Technology

Advanced Carbon Products, LLC has developed the following new processes for manufacturing advanced carbon products:

A continuous process to convert common refinery streams into highly aromatic petroleum pitch with coking values in excess of 50% and a softening point between 110°C to 120°C.  The process has a short residence time and a high yield.

A continuous process to convert highly aromatic petroleum pitch into isotropic pitch with a high softening point (>260°C) and a high coking value (~80%).  The process has a short residence time and a high yield.

A continuous process to convert highly aromatic petroleum pitch into anisotropic mesophase pitch with a high softening point (>300°C) and a high coking value (~90%).  The process has a short residence time and a high yield.  This mesophase pitch can be used to produce high-quality carbon fibers with a higher Young’s modulus and substantially lower cost than using polyacrylonitrile (PAN).

A novel process to convert these pitches into isotropic and anisotropic foams with a wide range of properties, including bulk specific gravities from 0.2 to 0.8.  The anisotropic foams have very high heat and electrical conductivities in only one direction.

Samples produced by the above processes are available for testing.
